Key advice on end-of-life tyres

The Imported Motor Vehicle Industry Association (VIA) has issued a reminder to its members about the Tyrewise tyre collection scheme, which will officially start on September 1.
It has emailed out a list of key advice about the programme that has been designed to ensure the responsible disposal of end-of-life tyres (ELTs) and contribute to a cleaner environment.
Avoid stockpiling tyres
Members are advised to continue with their current disposal arrangements until the scheme starts because Tyrewise is not funded to collect ELTs before September 1. The only exception is for tyres sold since March 1 that have become end-of-life since then. Ensure these are stored separately and you have evidence the fee was paid on them.
Webinar library
Tyrewise has a comprehensive library of webinars to help people understand the scheme and its requirements. These can be accessed at any time for up-to-date information and guidance.
Health and safety information
Businesses wanting tyre collections need to provide Tyrewise with some health and safety information. Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, your business and Tyrewise are jointly responsible for the wellbeing of contractors who enter your site. Please supply your health and safety policy, or alternatively, photographs of hazard boards displayed at your site, or evidence of warning signs.
Booking collections
If you need tyre collections, Tyrewise will send links and login information to your Tyrewise software administrator a couple of weeks before collections begin. Admins will be able to add others who can book and verify jobs once they are logged in.
Registering with Tyrewise
You need to be registered with Tyrewise to be part of the scheme. You can check if your business is listed in the searchable directory of registered partners on the Tyrewise website. If you can’t find your listing, ensure you’ve returned your signed acknowledgment of the code of participation and health and safety information.
VIA’s alert, sent out on August 15, notes the Tyrewise team is on hand to offer support and can be contacted on 0800-897-394.
Any association members with questions can also contact VIA on 0800-842-842 or email info@via.org.nz.
