Zero-emitters triple market share
Battery EVs (BEVs) have more than tripled their share of Australia’s new-vehicle market over the past year, according to the latest sales figures from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI).
Zero-emitters accounted for 23.1 per cent of sales across the ditch last month, up from 7.3 per cent in October 2025.
The jump came as the overall market recorded 103,325 sales in October 2026, a 3.8 per cent increase compared with the same month last year.
Tony Weber, FCAI chief executive, says consumers are benefiting from stronger competition across brands, models and technologies.
“Australia’s open and competitive market has put consumers in the driver’s seat, with more choice across brands, technologies, features and price points,” adds Weber, pictured.
“Consumers are making rational choices and are attracted to options that reduce their costs. Despite continuing pressure on household budgets and higher borrowing costs in 2026, the October result shows there is extraordinary resilience in new-vehicle demand.”
FCAI’s data shows October’s petrol-vehicle sales were down 35.9 per cent on the same month last year and diesel sales fell 14.7 per cent.
Toyota’s Hilux was the leading model with 5,954 sales, followed by the Ford Ranger on 4,841, the Toyota RAV4 with 4,718, BYD’s Sealion 7 on 2,524 and Toyota’s Prado with 2,397.
Next was the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro with 2,178 registrations, and BYD’s Atto 2 on 1,943 and its Shark 6 with 1,843. Geely’s EX5 on 1,789 units and the Ford Everest with 1,741 completed the top 10 for October.
Toyota was the top marque last month with 20,649 sales, followed by BYD on 10,025 and Ford with 7,310.
