X55 Hybrid touches down
BAIC is growing its electrified-vehicle range in New Zealand with the launch of the X55 Hybrid, which is now arriving at dealerships nationwide now.
The all-new model joins the recently introduced B30 Hybrid to expand the marque’s hybrid SUV offering. Petrol variants of X55 and B30 are also available.
The X55 Hybrid, which has two variants – the Elite and Premium, has a new powertrain that delivers improved fuel efficiency with increased performance.
They are powered by a 1.5-litre petrol variable-valve timing engine alongside a 160kW electric motor producing 310Nm of torque and zero power lag. The X55 Hybrid delivers combined fuel consumption of 5.8l/100km.
The new model’s RE-HEV technology allows the battery to power the motors at low and medium speeds while energy recovery recharges the battery during coasting.
At higher speeds, the engine drives the generator to power the motor and recharge the battery. This technology enables strong acceleration from a standstill. It delivers smooth and immediate power through a single-speed drive system.

“More Kiwis are looking for vehicles that deliver lower fuel consumption without compromising on performance, comfort or equipment. The X55 Hybrid achieves that while continuing BAIC’s reputation for exceptional value and premium specification.”
Featuring MacPherson front suspension and multi-link independent rear suspension, the X55 Hybrid carries the same handling “pedigree” as its petrol stablemate.
The SUV boasts a 12.3-inch central control screen and 10.25-inch LCD instrument screen, as well as a “starship style” central console and dashboard with smart digital display.
BAIC is offering a limited-time offer on both hybrids, which represent a saving of $2,000. The X55 Elite is available from $40,990 plus on-road costs, while the Premium Hybrid starts at $42,990.
All BAICs sold here are backed by a seven-year unlimited kilometre warranty. The marque’s network has expanded to 14 locations nationally with Hawke’s Bay, Palmerston North, Rotorua and west Auckland added at the start of September.
