Market records consecutive monthly rises as Toyota Aqua maintains its position as the leading model.

Used import sales increase

The number of used-imported cars registered in New Zealand totalled 7,567 last month, an 11.3 per cent increase from 6,799 units in June 2025.

The latest tally means the sector’s sales have increased for two months in a row, with June’s result up 5.7 per cent from 7,162 units in May and an 11.6 per cent climb from 6,782 in April.

Year-to-date, there have been 44,282 registrations, which is 5.7 per cent higher than 41,895 units at the same stage a year ago.

Toyota’s Aqua, pictured, was the best-selling model last month with 685 registrations – up by 2.7 per cent from 667 units in June last year – and a market share of 9.1 per cent.

The Toyota Prius claimed second spot on 436 units and 5.8 per cent of the market, Nissan’s Note was third with 366 and 4.8 per cent, and Toyota’s Corolla came fourth with 295 and 3.9 per cent.

Subaru’s Impreza completed the top five after recording 236 registrations and nabbing a 3.1 per cent share of the market in June.

The Aqua leads the year-to-date standings on 4,171 units and a market share of 9.4 per cent, followed by the Prius with 2,699 and 6.1 per cent.

Toyota was the leading marque in June with 2,588 registrations for 34.2 per cent of the market. Its monthly total was up by 4.6 per cent from 2,474 in the same month of 2025. 

Nissan was the second most popular brand last month with 1,232 units for a market share of 16.3 per cent, and Mazda was third on 975 and 12.9 per cent. 

Year to date, Toyota leads the way with 15,564 registrations and a 35.1 per cent market share. 

Nissan is next on 7,012 and 15.8 per cent, and Mazda has 5,593 and 12.6 per cent.
