Turners Cars set to expand

Turners Cars, New Zealand’s largest used-vehicle dealership group, is planning to open a new branch in Whanganui.

It will offer a full suite of services, such as buying and selling vehicles, on-site finance and insurance, and there will be a wide selection of used cars – including ex-lease and Japanese imports – available on site.

There will be a weekly auction as well as vehicles sold at retail with the company reporting it will be looking to buy more cars than ever locally for the business as 24-28 Liffiton Street. It will be similar to Turners Cars’ Timaru branch, pictured, which opened in 2023

“Our nearby branches in Palmerston North and New Plymouth have had great success, and this new branch in Whanganui will allow us to better serve the region,” says Greg Hedgepeth, chief executive officer of Turners Auto Retail.

“It’s something we’ve been considering for a while now and we’re very happy to be able to expand the network into Whanganui. It definitely meets our criteria and it’s great to be able to invest in an important area of New Zealand.”

Turners will be investing around $4.5 million in to designing and developing the dealership over the next year with the aim of opening the doors in April 2027.

The company says it has a proven track record of successfully establishing branches across regional New Zealand, including recent expansions into Nelson and Timaru.

Hedgepeth adds: “We’re confident the new site will allow us to buy even more cars locally as well as selling a wide range of used cars.

“There’s still plenty of water to go under the bridge as we develop the site. Our team is working hard to hit the open date so we can welcome the local community in.”

Turners has been recognised as New Zealand’s most trusted used-vehicle dealership for six consecutive years since the category’s inception by Reader’s Digest.

“Trust is hard to earn but very easy to lose,” says Hedgepeth. “We’re proud of our track record and remain vigilant in maintaining it.

“I know our Whanganui team will continue our track record of delivering excellent value to the region, supported by a wider network dedicated to exceeding customer expectations.”
