Hyundai has unveiled its leading fuel-cell system alongside its new Xcient class-eight truck – an advanced production model designed specifically for the North American market.
It’s the world’s first mass-produced hydrogen-powered heavy-duty truck. Launched in 2020, the Xcient Fuel Cell has been deployed in 13 countries, logging more than 13 million kilometres of cumulative driving in Switzerland where it was initially launched.
The new model features an upgraded power system. Since 2021, it has undergone rigorous testing across diverse climates and use cases.
It’s powered by a 180kW system equipped with two 90kW stacks for reliable energy generation and a 72kWh battery pack. It boasts a 350kW e-motor, which provides maximum torque of 2,237Nm and has a driving range of 724km under optimal conditions.
The truck contains 10 hydrogen tanks with a combined capacity of around 68kg and includes a class-eight tractor variant tailored for North America. Its gross combination weight comes in at up to 37,195kg, suitable for heavy-duty applications.
Interior enhancements include a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster, offering drivers clear and concise information, and a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with physical buttons integrated into the centre console for driver convenience and ergonomics.
The new model has an ADAS suite designed to improve safety and minimise driver fatigue. These include forward collision-avoidance assist, lane-departure warning, smart cruise control, blind-spot collision and, blind-spot and forward collision warning-near.
