Suzuki’s global sales surge

Suzuki Motor Corp has leapfrogged two of its rivals to become the second-best Japanese marque for global vehicle sales during the April-September period.

New data from the country’s major carmakers shows Toyota Motor Corp on top for the six months, followed by Suzuki, Honda Motor Co and Nissan Motor Co respectively.

Toyota’s global sales, including Lexus vehicles, totalled 5,059,014 units in the first half of the financial year, down four per cent from the same period in 2025. Its production also fell 1.9 per cent year-on-year to 4,895,406.

The figures marked the company’s first decline in global sales and production for April-September in two years and came amid weaker demand in China, reports Kyodo News.

Stronger sales in India helped Suzuki climb from fourth place a year ago into second on the sales ladder, with its global total rising 19.9 per cent to a first-half record of 1,824,006 units.

Honda’s sales fell four per cent to 1,661,569 units and Nissan’s were down 11.8 per cent to 1,355,233, with both companies recording lower activity in the Chinese market.

Japan’s eight main carmakers sold a combined 11.83 million vehicles worldwide over the six months, a drop of 1.3 per cent from a year earlier, reports Kyodo News.

Mazda Motor Corp ranked fifth with 616,776 sales, followed by Daihatsu Motor Co on 494,759, Subaru Corp with 470,379 and Mitsubishi Motors Corp on 356,887.
