SUV to lead expanded line-up
GWM says its all-new Ora 5 is slated to arrive in New Zealand from June after its big reveal at this month’s Melbourne Motor Show.
The next-generation SUV represents a “significant advancement” in the brand’s strategy and reinforces its commitment to expanding “accessible” battery-electric options for Kiwis.
The Ora 5 brings increased size and capability to the nameplate while reinforcing GWM’s focus on delivering “affordable, technology-led electric mobility across core growth segments”.
The small SUV is set to lead an expanded line-up with more new models scheduled to arrive during this year and into 2027. With GWM already established in plug-in hybrid offerings, the expansion of the Ora EV range will strengthen its “new-energy credentials while delivering greater choice”.
The pricing strategy for the new 5 SUV sets the tone for the positioning of future Ora models.
Despite its larger size and enhanced capability, the 5 is priced in line with the outgoing Ora hatch.
It will enter the market starting from $36,990 for the Lux variant and $39,990 for the high-grade Ultra, plus on-road costs,
The Ora 5 brings together distinctive design, the intelligent Coffee OS operating system and everyday usability, “delivering a balanced blend of technology, efficiency and accessibility”.
The addition of new EV models also positions GWM to capitalise on the clean car standard, building further momentum towards its “drive to top five” ambitions.
Under bonnet & inside
The Ora 5 has a front-mounted electric motor producing 150kW and 260Nm. Energy is supplied by a 58.3kWh lithium iron phosphate battery supplied by SVOLT, GWM’s dedicated EV battery division, for a WLTC range of about 430km. Power consumption is 15.5kWh/100km.
The SUV supports DC fast charging at up to 120kW, enabling a 30-80 per cent recharge in around 20 minutes under optimal conditions, while AC charging supports convenient overnight replenishment. Vehicle-to-load functionality delivers up to 6kW of external power for lifestyle and recreational applications.
Underpinning the system is GWM’s 15-in-1 intelligent electric-drive architecture. This integrates key hardware and software into a single unit to deliver faster response times, improved efficiency and enhanced energy management. With energy conversion efficiency of up to 95 per cent, the Ora 5 “reflects a highly optimised, next-generation electric drivetrain”.
The SUV boasts a clean, modern cabin centred around GWM’s latest Coffee OS intelligent cockpit. A 14.6-inch central display serves as the primary interface for vehicle functions, media and navigation.
The system supports advanced voice control, over-the-air updates and wireless smartphone connectivity. Key functions are positioned to reduce complexity and support driver focus.
The interior features soft-touch materials and a minimalist layout aiming at enhancing comfort and refinement. Practicality remains a focus, with 362 litres of boot capacity supporting everyday usability.
