SUV sales hit milestone
Mazda’s cumulative global production and sales of its CX-5 reached five million units by the end of 2025.
The achievement marks the third model by the marque to surpass the same milestone following the 323 and Mazda3, and has been sold in more than 100 countries and regions globally.
David Hodge, managing director of Mazda Motors of NZ, says: “Since the first generation launched locally in 2012, the CX-5 has become a recognisable sight on New Zealand roads.
“With more than 34,000 sales, it has proven itself as a key companion to owners and their families. We look forward to the arrival of the all-new CX-5 this year, a further development of what’s the perfect vehicle for Kiwi lifestyles.”
The all-new CX-5 was unveiled in Europe in July last year. It will be released in North America and Japan in the first half of 2026. New Zealand will welcome it during the second half of this year.
Since production of the first generation CX-5, pictured above, began at the Ujina plant number two in Hiroshima, the company has expanded its manufacturing footprint to Ujina plant number two, Hofu Plant, and facilities in China.
Local assembly has also been carried out in Malaysia and Vietnam, enabling the CX-5 to grow into the best-selling model in Mazda's current line-up.
Koichiro Yamaguchi, programme manager for the CX-5, says: “The all-new CX-5 has been fully changed in eight years, and further refines its sporty design and driving dynamics. Now it offers an even more spacious cabin.
“Meticulously focused on daily usability, it has evolved into a new-generation SUV that makes driving more comfortable and life itself richer. We will continue to nurture the CX-5 carefully, aiming for it to be cherished for years to come.”
