New chapter for key model
BMW has unveiled its all-new fifth-generation X5, ushering in a new era for one of the brand’s most successful models.
The X5 was a pioneer of the sports activity vehicle (SAV) segment when first launched in 1999, and the latest version includes Neue Klasse design features, next-generation digital technologies and sixth-generation BMW eDrive innovation.
BMW describes the X5 as a cornerstone of the marque’s success in global markets, with its sales figures reaching 7,000 in New Zealand and 3.1 million worldwide.
The all-new version aims to build on this legacy with a “bold new design, advanced digital technologies and the broadest powertrain portfolio ever offered for a BMW X model”.
It will be available in New Zealand from the fourth quarter of this year with three drivetrain technologies: a diesel variant with 48V mild hybrid technology, a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model, and, for the first time, a fully electric iX5.
The vehicle features a vertical BMW kidney grille framed by new adaptive LED headlights with double-X light signatures, muscular wheel arches and flush winglet door handles.
Wheel options range from 21 to 23 inches, with 11 exterior paint finishes, including four BMW individual colours, providing extensive personalisation.
Inside, the new X5 offers premium materials, including glass accents and natural slate surfaces, alongside new X-pattern stitching, redesigned steering wheels and enhanced ambient lighting.
BMW Panoramic iDrive, powered by BMW Operating System X, also makes its debut and represents the brand’s most advanced human-machine interface to date.
Key digital features include BMW Panoramic Vision, projecting information across the lower windscreen, a 3D head-up display for driver-focused information, and a 17.9-inch central display with QuickSelect interface.
There is also a new passenger screen, enabling entertainment, streaming and productivity for the front passenger.
Powering the fully electric iX5 60 xDrive is sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology and an 800-volt architecture. Producing 425kW and 805Nm, it accelerates from 0–100kph in 4.6 seconds while delivering a WLTP range of up to 845km and charging speeds of up to 460kW.
PHEV variants produce 360kW and have an electric range up to 102km, while the diesel version has a six-cylinder engine featuring 48V mild hybrid assistance.
Production of the new X5 will commence in August at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in the US. Combustion-engine variants are set to launch globally in November 2026, with battery-electric and plug-in hybrid variants arriving in early 2027.
