Firefighters had to use a crane to remove a Mercedes-Benz car from the Spanish Steps in Rome after an 80-year-old man got the vehicle stuck while driving down the landmark.

The tourist spot in Italy’s capital is not designed for vehicles but the motorist somehow ended up heading down the steep steps before coming to a halt.

Municipal police say the man tested negative for alcohol and was cited on the spot for driving on the monument, reports AP.

The incident happened in the early hours of June 17 but police note the driver, who was a Rome resident, was unable to explain how he had ended up on the historic site.
