Suzuki’s EV arrives

Suzuki is now in the world of electric mobility with the arrival on our shores of its e Vitara built on a dedicated EV platform.

Offering a “rare choice” in its class of two or all-wheel drive, it features a sculpted exterior highlighted by LED lighting while aerodynamic detailing enhances efficiency.

Built on the newly developed Heartect-e platform, its powertrain delivers a “nimble and responsive experience” with dual eAxle architecture in the 4WD system enhancing driving and stability.

Utilising separate front and rear electric motors provides precise torque control, and improves traction, stability and motoring confidence across varying road conditions.

The choice of normal, eco and sport modes, plus snow for 2WD and trail for AWD, “support everyday driving and more challenging surfaces”.

The electric powertrain incorporates a lithium iron-phosphate battery, electric drive axles and an integrated heat-pump thermal management system.

The e Vitara is the first-mass production Suzuki to incorporate a heat pump, which is a thermal management system to maintain a comfortable cabin environment.

Both variants feature a 61kWh powertrain. The 2WD drive has a WLTP range of 426km while the AWD is rated at 395km.

Getting from 20-80 per cent via DC rapid charging takes about 34 minutes, while a full charge requires around seven hours with a 7kW AC wallbox or about 26.5 hours using an in-cable control box.

Aerodynamically styled five-spoke and 18-inch alloys are shaped to reduce air flow and minimise drag. They are shod with 225/55R18 tyres, while ventilated disc brakes are fitted front and rear.

The e Vitara has a grille shutter in the lower section of the front bumper that plays an important role with a battery EV.

Not only does it reduce air resistance, it extends range and helps manage the battery. As heated parts need to be cooled, the shutter opens to let air through and closes to warm the parts when required.

The cabin boasts a minimalist dashboard design, floating centre console and 12-colour ambient lighting. Unlike many other models, the EV has physical climate-control switches for ease of use, alongside touchscreen functionality.

Aaron Wales, automobile sales manager of Suzuki NZ, says: “The e Vitara combines our highly regarded compact SUV heritage with advanced electric technology.

“It will be an excellent addition to our range of affordable and fun small cars and SUVs. There is no doubt this outstanding new SUV will appeal to New Zealanders and their sense of adventure.”

The 2WD version has an introductory price of $54,990 plus on-road costs, while the AllGrip-e variant retails for a limited time at $62,990.
