RZ touches down

Lexus has confirmed the arrival of the all-new RZ in New Zealand with vehicles now at dealerships nationwide.

It introduces the marque’s steer-by-wire system and yoke steering wheel, changing how the SUV is driven and experienced. Together, they deliver “more precise control, easier manoeuvring and a more intuitive connection” between the driver and road.

The all-wheel-drive line-up is topped by the RZ 550e F Sport, the most powerful variant offered here and priced from $134,900. The RZ 500e Dynamic starts at $109,900, and $119,900 for the latter with steer-by-wire.

“The RZ is a big step forward for Lexus electrification,” says Andrew Davis, vice-president of Lexus NZ. “It delivers more power, improved range and faster charging while introducing steering technology that genuinely changes how the vehicle feels to drive.”

It’s the marque’s first model to adopt steer-by-wire technology. It is fitted as standard on the 550e F Sport and available as an option on the 500e Dynamic.

By removing the traditional mechanical connection, steer-by-wire allows the steering to respond more naturally to speed and conditions.

Paired with the compact yoke steering wheel (pictured), drivers can achieve full steering lock without crossing hands, making low-speed manoeuvring easier while delivering more precision and stability at higher speeds.

The design also opens space for the driver with more leg room, improved visibility and easier entry and exit.

Davis says: “The yoke gives you a clearer view ahead and more space in the cabin, and it feels natural from the first drive despite being new technology.”

Performance has stepped up across the range. The RZ 550e F Sport produces a maximum output of 300kW, while the Dynamic delivers 280kW for an increase of 50kW.

Both have a revised battery-electric system, including a higher-capacity battery and 22kW onboard AC charger. Lexus has also introduced enhanced battery thermal management to optimise charging performance across a wider range of conditions.

The F Sport has a more performance-focused set-up with sports suspension tuning, aerodynamic detailing, and unique interior and exterior design elements. It also introduces interactive manual drive, enabling drivers to select an eight-speed virtual gear system via paddle shifters.

“The updated RZ delivers improved real-world driving range, alongside faster and more consistent charging,” says Davis. “This is still very much a Lexus. You get advanced technology and strong performance, but it’s delivered with the comfort, quality and attention to detail.”
