Plug-in RAV4 to bring ‘flexibility’

The first RAV4 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) will become available to Kiwi buyers this June.

Andrew Davis, chief strategic officer of Toyota NZ, says the model is designed to remove barriers that “often hold people back from going electric”.

“For many New Zealanders, electrification can feel like an all-or-nothing decision. The RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid changes that. You can plug it in and do most of your weekly driving on electric, but when you need to go on a long journey it works like a hybrid. That flexibility is what makes it so compelling.” 

Data from the 2023 census shows 66.1 per cent of New Zealanders drive a private or company vehicle to work. The RAV4 PHEV front-wheel drive has an NEDC tested driving range of 154km and AWD variants come in at 144km. 

A full charge at home will cost “approximately $9, offering a compelling reduction in running costs compared with petrol”. Davis adds: “Most people’s average trip is around 20km, well within the electric range, which means fewer fuel stops and real savings over time. 

“Just as importantly, there’s no range anxiety. The driver can switch between electric or hybrid operation when travelling in and out of town, or the vehicle can automatically switch between the two.”

Built on Toyota’s sixth-generation plug-in hybrid system, the RAV4 PHEV pairs a 2.5-litre petrol engine with electric motors. This delivers a system output of 201kW in the GXL front-wheel-drive grade, while the AWD XSE and GR Sport grades produce 227kW.

There are drive modes. Auto selects the most efficient combination of petrol and electric power for everyday driving, HEV mode prioritises hybrid operation to preserve battery charge and EV is fully electric.

AWD variants offer 1,500kg braked towing capacity, which makes them suited to towing small boats and jet skis, trailers or small caravans. The FWD GXL has 800kg braked towing. All grades have a 1,500W/220V AC inverter, allowing the vehicle to power small appliances directly. 

The GXL offers the most accessible entry point into the range, delivering the full plug-in hybrid experience with 201kW of output and strong efficiency.

It features Toyota’s sixth-generation hybrid system, an 11kW onboard charger, 50kW fast-charging capability, all three driving modes, heated front seats and a durable fabric interior. Its exterior has black design elements and 18-inch alloys.

The XSE has increased power, higher specification and enhanced capability. Producing 227kW and equipped with Toyota’s E-Four AWD system, it provides improved traction. There are also drive modes for trail and snow, along with downhill assist control. 

Inside, the XSE has premium features such as a 12.9-inch multimedia display, panoramic view monitor, synthetic leather and ultrasuede-accented seats, front-seat ventilation, a moonroof and two-tone paint.

The range-topper is the GR SPORT. The AWD combines output of 227kW with enhancements inspired by Gazoo Racing. It features retuned suspension, performance dampers, a wider track and upgraded steering calibration. Unique elements include lightweight 20-inch alloys, GR styling details and a performance-orientated cabin.
