NZTA issues airbag update

The NZTA has announced that from November 1, 2018, all outstanding airbag recalls will need to be closed out by the manufacturer before a vehicle can be certified for compliance.

This is not part of the mandatory recall - It is NZTA enforcing existing requirements contained in the Land Transport Vehicle Compliance Rule 2002.

From November 1, any vehicle with an outstanding airbag recall will be flagged as 'damaged' at the border.

This will then need to be rectified before the vehicle can be certified for registration and an MR2A issued.

As the manufacturers’ representatives in New Zealand have no information on these vehicles arriving, there will be major delays if importers leave them to be rectified upon arrival as replacement parts will have to be sourced from overseas.

VIA, (the Imported Motor Vehicle Industry Association), is advising to have all safety-related recalls (not just airbag recalls) closed out by the manufacturer in Japan (or the jurisdiction the vehicle is currently registered in) before shipping.
