Hybrid tech bolsters line-up

Subaru says a new era for New Zealand’s SUV segment is a step closer with the first mid-sized model with a strong hybrid system powering symmetrical all-wheel drive now open for pre-orders.

The first examples of the sixth-generation Forester will be here in July 2025 and will be priced from $49,990.

The line-up includes six variants. Three are petrol only – the AWD, AWD Sport and AWD Touring. The rest have the marque’s most advanced hybrid powertrain to date. These are the AWD Hybrid, AWD Hybrid Sport and AWD Hybrid Touring, pictured.

The new-generation range has been re-engineered inside and out, with more features demanded by Kiwis as standard plus an expanded hybrid offering. This results in a boost in specification to the entry variant, the AWD, over the outgoing 2.5i AWD.

Making its debut, Subaru’s next-generation strong Hybrid e-Boxer system combines a 2.5-litre engine with a 90kW electric motor and 1.1kWh battery for a smoother, quieter and more responsive driving experience.

With significantly improved efficiency and a range of more than 1,000km per tank, the Hybrid marks a “leap forward for the nameplate and pivotal step in Subaru’s electrification journey”.

Boasting 220mm ground clearance, standard X-Mode, enhanced suspension tuning and new dual-pinion steering for improved precision and response, the all-new Forester “remains purpose-built to tackle New Zealand’s roads and terrain with confidence”.

Inside, the SUV has been revamped to elevate comfort, connectivity and cabin refinement. Key features include an 11.6-inch high-definition infotainment touchscreen and a Qi wireless smartphone charging pad.

Then there’s a 12.3-inch digital driver display on select hybrid variants, 360-degree surround view monitor, enhanced cabin insulation and vibration damping for reduced noise, and ergonomic seating for increased comfort

“The Forester has been a firm favourite with families, weekend explorers and everyday drivers, and we’re sure they will welcome this stronger, smarter and more capable next-generation model,” says Kym Mellow, general manager of Inchcape NZ.

“Now equipped with Subaru’s most advanced hybrid technology, the three Hybrid variants are also more efficient.”
