Group hits sales milestone
SAIC Motor, the parent company of MG Motor New Zealand, has reported global sales of 2.045 million vehicles for the first half of 2026.
The performance makes it the first Chinese automotive manufacturer to surpass the two-million-unit milestone in the first six months of the year.
The company sold 395,000 vehicles globally in June, up 8.1 per cent from the same period a year ago.
It says the growth was driven by continued demand across its portfolio of brands and strong performance in new energy vehicles (NEVs), which were up 23.1 per cent year-on-year to 796,000 units.
International sales have also accelerated and jumped 48.7 per cent over the same period to 735,000 units.
SAIC Motor’s brands include MG, Roewe, Maxus, IM Motors and Rising Auto, while it also has joint ventures with companies such as Volkswagen and GM.
During the first half of 2026, SAIC Motor introduced more than 20 new models across battery electric, plug-in hybrid and range-extended electric powertrains. This included the MG4 EV Urban, pictured, and MGS6 EV launched in New Zealand.
Dimitri Andreatidis, marketing director for MG Motor Australia and New Zealand, says the sales milestone demonstrates the strength of the global organisation supporting the MG brand.
“As MG continues to grow in Australia and New Zealand, we benefit from the global investment, technology innovation and product development being delivered across the wider SAIC Motor group,” he adds.
“This momentum supports our continued expansion as we introduce more vehicles and technologies to meet the evolving needs of customers in our markets.”
