Global EV sales increase 25pc

Global sales of EVs came in at 1.7 million units last month, an increase of 15 per cent when compared to August 2024.
The total, which included 1.16 million battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and 570,000 plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), was also five per cent more than achieved in July this year.
It means the year-to-date figure worldwide stands at 12.5 million sales and is up 25 per cent from the same period last year, according to Rho Motion.
The company, which specialises in EV supply chain research and insights, notes there has been an increase in the year-to-date numbers for all the major regions.
Europe’s EV market has grown by 31 per cent in the first eight months of 2025 to 2.6 million sales, with BEVs and PHEVs up 31 per cent and 30 per cent respectively.
Bolstering the upward swing is a 45 per cent rise in demand for EVs in Germany and a 31 per cent increase in the UK.
The Chinese EV market grew by 11 per cent between July and August and it has now completed 7.6 million sales year-to-date, up 25 per cent from a year ago
North America sold a record monthly number of EVs in August and has delivered 1.3 million units over the past eight months, which represents market growth of six per cent.
As for the rest of world, one million EVs have been sold so far this year for an increase of 44 per cent.
