Big month for sales
Collecting Cars has launched into 2026 with strong momentum and with a big February set to follow.
The online auction platform for classic, performance and collectible cars cleared 60 sold lots last month for a total of A$4 million, or about NZ$4.71m, in sales – almost the same as January 2025.
The result is a healthy sign for the local collector market and opens the door to a possible repeat of the company’s record results last year of A$80m in local sales from about 1,100 lots.
“Our January sales results show local buyers and sellers weren’t dissuaded by the end-of-year holiday period,” says Lee Hallett, head of Asia-Pacific at Collecting Cars. “February 2026 is set to accelerate our results with a number of special cars, including some special machinery from two V8 legends.”
Larry Perkins’ former 1997 Bathurst 1000-winning Holden Commodore V8 Supercar, pictured, has been fully restored under the guidance of his son Jack. It will be available to buy next month.
There’s also Greg Murphy’s Hellcat-powered 1969 Dodge Charger, a “handcrafted gem” made by US custom-car builders and resto-mod specialist Ringbrothers.
“These two cars have undergone painstaking ground-up rebuilds,” says Hallett. “It’s not often cars of their provenance and finish become available, so we encourage anyone interested in owning them to secure them quickly.”
Collecting Cars’ January 2026 sales highlights included a 1968 Alfa Romeo 1750 GTV, which sold for A$70,888, a 2004 Lamborghini Gallardo for A$122,500, 2007 Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG for A$145,500.
The company will be hold its first New Zealand Coffee Run of 2026 in Queenstown on February 22 at the Lake Hayes Pavilion. The free event starts at 8am.
“We’re assembling some of the South Island’s greatest collector cars in one of New Zealand’s most spectacular locations,” says Hallett. “Owners are welcome to join and display their cars.”
